Popular Notions of Legitimacy and Trust vis-à-vis Public Institutions across Europe and Latin America

Within the framework of the European Research Council (ERC)-funded ‘Foundations of Institutional AuThority‘ (FIAT) research project, the panel will present and compare preliminary findings from empirical research conducted by FIAT team members in six case studies across Northern, Central and Eastern Europe and Latin America. Focus groups discussions in selected countries examined, inter alia, public perceptions of legitimacy and trust held towards public institutions, including the Courts. This panel will also consider traditional conceptions of the separation of powers and how these theories may or may not apply in practice in contemporary nation states. Finally, the panel will present on the methodological approaches, lessons learned, and obstacles faced in using focus groups as a research method in law.
