Nature, Peoples & the Law: Political and Legal Innovations in Ecological Democracy
Our planet is facing impending climate disaster but constitutional democracies around the world continue fossil fuel extraction against warnings from the scientific community and the increasing opposition of local communities and climate activists. This panel will review the recent theoretical, juridical, and political innovations used in the struggle against extractivism and pollution from a democratic and global perspective. Papers will cover the intersections between environmental, indigenous, and community rights, and their relation to territory, democracy, and the law, attempting to offer a better understanding of ecological democracy and the constitutional tools at hand to avert ecocide.
