SUMMARY:Women\, Gender and Constitutionalism in Central and Eastern Europe
DESCRIPTION:The panel undertakes a discussion of how constitutionalism has contributed to the entrenchment or subversion of gender hierarchies in CEE\, thereby affirming or denying women and sexual minorities the right to equal citizenship. The presentations in this panel will focus on several dimensions of the constitutionalization of gender (e.g. constitution-making\, constitutional amendments\, constitutional interpretations\, constitutional referenda\, as well as constitutional debates). The panel aims to explain how the struggle for women’s and sexual minorities‘ rights is embedded in the constitutional processes in the broader context of democratic transformation and the accession of CEE countries to international organizations and the EU. As a result\, the panel draws attention to the issue of gender justice as a key element of democratization and the neglected aspect in the constitutional and political analyses of the rule of law backsliding.
