SUMMARY:The European Union and the Current Challenges of Migration Flows
DESCRIPTION:The EU has been confronted with successive migratory flows that have served as a driving force for significant changes in the EU law landscape. A major challenge encompasses border management through externalisation which exacerbates the risk of “pushbacks“ and inaccessibility of asylum rights. In addition\, the creation of “hotspots“ – reception and identification centres – poses a risk of insecurity\, particularly sexual violence against women and girls. With this in mind\, there is a clear need for a collective effort from the Member States in order to deal with these issues. One of the most recent and significant examples of these challenges is the war in Ukraine. While it has prompted rapid responses from the EU\, we should reflect on how Member States‘ solidarity and consequent EU integration will be affected by the current large flow of people in need of social protection. Together\, these communications will reflect on the consequences of these challenges for the future of the EU.
