SUMMARY:Sustainability as a transboundary concept
DESCRIPTION:Not only since the UN Sustainable Development Goals were adopted\, sustainability is a societal and a legal goal. Whereas the history of sustainability shows that the concept itself can be traced back to the sustainable use of wood in the context of forest law\, thus in administrative law\, in more recent times sustainability precepts emanate from the international sphere. Since sustainability can only achieve its environmental\, economic and social goals if applied broadly\, thus transgressing territorial borders as well as actors\, it does not come as a surprise\, that it tends to address all state powers\, that it goes beyond the public in encompassing also private actors\, and that it can be found at the international as well as the national and subnational levels. In this panel\, we will examine the transboundary nature of the concept of sustainability along three different lines\, i.e. the public/the private\, the legislature/the judiciary as well as the domestic/the international spheres.
