SUMMARY:Public Law and Populism
DESCRIPTION:From Washington to Warsaw\, Budapest to Brasilia\, populism is on the rise worldwide. This panel considers the institutional origins and response to this problem through an exploration of two forthcoming books on populism\, Democracy Unmoored: Populism and the Corruption of Popular Sovereignty (OUP)\, by Sam Issacharoff\, and A Pandemic of Populists (CUP) by Wojciech Sadurski. Both books canvas the origins and nature of populist attacks on constitutional democracy\, with particular attention to populist assaults on judicial independence and the separation of powers. The question both books ask is also what can be done to contain these assaults\, and what we can say about the future of democracy and illiberal populism.
