SUMMARY:Making of Border Surveillance: A Question of Legality and Accountability
DESCRIPTION:Through the harnessing of new surveillance technologies\, states‘ practices of border and immigration control have transformed over the years as more emphasis has been put on filtering those who pose a risk to the country into which they seek entry. This process has been made possible with the growing intersection of immigration control with criminality\, resulting in the inclusion of a range of actors in policies and operations of virtual borders. This panels aims to discuss the making of virtual borders\, focusing on the EU as well as its relations with the UK. Panellist will examine how the intersection of border and immigration control with criminality has led to the transformation of people on the move as the bearer of rights\, and inclusion of what ought to be their non-negotiable rights in international trade agreements. The purpose of this panel is thus to shed light on the new accountability challenges arising from the making of virtual borders and immigration controls.
