SUMMARY:Global Pandemocracy - The COVID-19 Crisis and its Impacts on Democracy Internationally
DESCRIPTION:Democracies around the world have been struck by the COVID-19 pandemic and had to deal with a great number of challenges: protecting lives\, organising parliaments\, reacting fast and effective\, upholding the rule of law\, providing health care\, safeguarding human rights etc. The variety of democracies provided a multitude of responses. Some countries declared a state of emergency\, others introduced virtual parliaments – some supreme/constitutional courts have been involved from the very beginning\, some have not been involved at all. Ruling by press conferences\, establishing lockdown and curfews or governing by soft law: the answers to the pandemic have been diverse. The panel brings together different approaches in an international and comparative perspective. The aim is to identify major developments and effects on democracy by understanding the diversity of constitutional law and the interrelation between legal mechanisms and governance responses in the pandemic.
