SUMMARY:Gender and illiberal constitutionalism from the Polish ang Hungarian perspective
DESCRIPTION:The panel discusses recent challenges to the gender regimes diagnosed in two Member States facing a tremendous rule of law backsliding – intentional capture of independent public institutions aimed at exercising unrestricted power. Such a constitutional shift\, combined with a populist narrative\, represents a threat to human rights protection\, which in context of women’s rights is particularly troubling due to preexisting shortcomings in guaranteeing those rights in practice. The papers explain processes taking place in Poland and Hungary in the field of reproductive rights and gender identity. The panel will discuss how the findings of those analyses can be located in the “big“ rule of law debate taking place in the European Union.
