SUMMARY:Effective control over technical standards embedded into EU law
DESCRIPTION:From medical protective equipment to the 5G or the production of renewable energy\, hardly any global problem can be tackled without technical standardisation. As a result\, EU public actors increasingly rely on international standards (such as ISO standards) and European harmonised standards to operationalise EU law. On the basis of recent legal and political developments\, our panel discusses whether the embedding of private technical standards into the EU legal order is accompanied by a sufficient and effective system of controls. Against this background\, the first paper examines recent CJEU‘s case law on the matter. The second paper discusses the current control of the Commission over the process and its controversies. The final paper considers the new EU strategy on technical standardisation and whether it offers the necessary impetus to establish a framework of effective control over the embedding of technical standards in EU law.
